Detailed Look at DIY Engine Maintenance
Thursday September 5, 2024 8:00am - 11:00am PDT
PAID SESSION
Get Tickets to this Workshop

If properly installed and maintained, diesel engines are remarkably reliable with almost all problems self-inflicted due to neglect. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling ‘Marine Diesel Engines’ (now in its 3rd edition, and used as a textbook in numerous diesel classes and co-founder of www.BoatHowTo.com), brings his broad experience to a class for boatowners, both power and sail, who want to get the most out of their time on the water. Distinguishing between contemporary and older diesels, Nigel will dive into a detailed look at fuel, oil, cooling, airflow, and powertrain systems, describing all normal maintenance procedures. He will define what the untrained boat owner can reasonably be expected to do and what should not be attempted. You will come away from this seminar with the confidence to carry out routine maintenance. This alone will save you the price of admission! This class is for anyone who does not mind getting their hands dirty. While a basic familiarity with engine components and prior experience with tools will be beneficial, they are not a necessity.

This is the first of Thursday’s two half-day classes. The two classes are designed to be complementary, but also to stand alone for those who cannot attend both. The first dives into the heart of diesel engine fundamentals, focusing on core maintenance tasks that can be undertaken by every boat owner (and some that should not be attempted), while the second class includes a detailed description of essential troubleshooting skills and techniques, including with a multimeter. Learn more and buy tickets to the second Thursday class.

This event will take place on the Cruising and Technical Stage which is on the 2nd floor of the yellow building at the Northwest Maritime campus. The stage can be reached by our elevator, with accessible parking nearby.

My Diesel Engine is Acting Up: What May Be Wrong, and Can I Fix It?
Thursday September 5, 2024 12:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
PAID SESSION
Get Tickets to this Workshop

My Diesel Engine Is Acting Up: What May Be Wrong, and Can I Fix It? The answer, commonly, is: ‘Yes’. But this requires an understanding of the operating principles of a diesel engine together with a familiarity with the core systems that keep the engine functional. Armed with this knowledge, it is possible to determine the likely causes of most common operating problems, other than those related to electricity; troubleshooting these requires the ability to conduct simple multimeter tests. Nigel will cover all these topics focusing on the most commonly experienced diesel engine problems, including overheating, a failure to develop full power, exhaust smoke of various colors, rough running, vibration, and a failure to crank or to fire when cranking. Over the years, Nigel has received thanks from numerous people he has enabled to get up and running in the boonies. This seminar will help you do the same. While familiarity with engine components and participation in the morning class will be beneficial, this is not a necessity.

This is the second of Thursday’s two half-day classes. Commonly Seen Electrical Installation Mistakes on Boats and How to Fix Them
Friday September 6, 2024 8:00am - 11:00am PDT
PAID SESSION
Get Tickets to this Workshop

The number one source of problems on boats large enough to have an electrical system, both power and sail, lies in these electrical systems. Most problems can be traced to inadequate design and/or poor installation. Unfortunately, many commonly seen installation mistakes come directly from boatbuilders and equipment installers. Others are added by boatowners with inadequate electrical knowledge. A number are potentially unsafe. Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling ‘Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual’ and co-founder of www.BoatHowTo.com, has seen them all. Nigel identifies issues that are likely to be found on almost all boats, and explains how to fix them. You will leave class with a far better understanding of your electrical system and knowing how to ensure a more reliable and safer system than you currently have. No previous experience is required.

This is the first of Friday’s two half-day classes. The two classes are designed to be complementary, but also to stand alone for those who cannot attend both. The first of Friday’s classes will identify common electrical installation mistakes, many of which are built in by boatbuilders and equipment installers. These errors can upend the enjoyment of our boats and may also create serious safety risks. Once recognized, most are easy to fix. This will be followed by the second class which includes a detailed description of essential troubleshooting skills and techniques, including with a multimeter. These classes are for anyone who has a boat with more than a minimal electrical system. Learn more and buy tickets to the second Friday class.

This event will take place on the Cruising and Technical Stage which is on the 2nd floor of the yellow building at the Northwest Maritime campus. The stage can be reached by our elevator, with accessible parking nearby.

Building a Traditional Sliding Rowing Seat
Friday September 6, 2024 9:30am - 12:00pm PDT
This seat is a minimalist form, ergonomically evolved for comfortable maximum power transmission from the rower to the oars. It is patterned after the seats in the John Wieland, a restored 1877 six oared (sweep) Whitehall lapstrake rowing barge in the fleet of the Dolphin Club in San Francisco.
My interest in seating was first inspired by John Kassay, a longtime professor at San Francisco State University. He was the author of 2 U. Mass. Press books, the second being The Book of American Windsor Furniture. The sliding seat is a bottom shaped slab, like a Windsor seat and the steps to making it are the same.
In this lecture demo, I will show the development of parts with partially assembled seats in various stages so that attendees can see the complete process.

Adventuress is a beloved National Historic Landmark (NHL) sailing ship—one of just two NHLs still in active USCG operation on the West Coast. Since 1989, more than 50,000 children and teens have climbed aboard for day and overnight voyages on the Salish Sea. Together, they raise the massive gaff-rigged mainsail, take the helm and learn to sail a tall ship. They learn about the importance of our waterways and oceans, explore maritime careers and—perhaps most important—learn what it takes to be a shipmate.

Space is limited. For advance purchase of Adventuress tickets visit www.soundexp.org/festivals. During Festival, please visit the Sound Experience booth on the Pope Marine Plaza.

SoundToxins Phytoplankton Monitoring Program
Friday September 6, 2024 12:00pm - 12:40pm PDT
Single celled algae, or phytoplankton, are the base of aquatic food webs and are essential to global nutrient cycles. However, some of these organisms produce toxins that can pose a threat to ecosystems and human health. SoundToxins is a phytoplankton monitoring program for Washington's inland waters designed to provide early warning of harmful algal bloom (HAB) events in order to minimize human health risks and economic losses. Partners and volunteers collect water samples at coastal sites across Puget Sound and the Northwest Straits year-round and use light microscopy and taxonomy to identify phytoplankton. In addition to providing sufficient warning of HABs for management decisions to mitigate losses and risk, the monitoring network also helps us keep track of new and emerging threats, track changes in phytoplankton communities over time, and increase our understanding of HABs in response to changing oceanic conditions.

The Importance of Underwater Services
Friday September 6, 2024 12:00pm - 12:45pm PDT
Talking points for underwater services

• There is a great amount of work b4 going in water
• When to have routine underwater services on your vessel depends on her type, size & frequency of use
• What is inspected in an underwater service
• Size of anode may be wrong with reactivation
• Advantages of a clean propeller
• Marine growth is different at different marinas, slips, fingers.
• What can it mean if your prop is clean before being cleaned.
• Disadvantages of cleaning a bottom painted boat
• Following EPA rules and regulations in the water
• Scheduling accordingly with planned trips
• Spinning your vessel for bottom paint’s sake
• What to look for regarding intakes, transducers, thru hulls
• What it feels like to touch an intake with a grounding issue
• Solid growth is good.
• Swim step brackets anodes need to be in the water.

Propeller Protective Products

Propeller protective items Divers need to know what NOT to touch.
*PropSpeed / LightSpeed / FoulFree (transducers) / StripSpeed (removing old *PropSpeed)
*PropOne
*PropGlide

PETIT SPRAY

Items that often get missed when bottom job

*Bottom of keel

*Inside thru hulls

*Top of rudder

*Inside thrusters

ALUMINUM ANODES
• Aluminum anodes are often like painting anodes
• Remove crust to reactivate the anode
• Use Aluminum anodes in brackish water. Gondola in New River.

When mixing aluminum & Zinc in saltwater galvanic corrosion CAN occur.

Because of the differenced in their electrical potentials.

Practical Electrical Systems Troubleshooting for Boaters
Friday September 6, 2024 12:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
PAID SESSION
Get Tickets to this Workshop

Nigel Calder outlines step-by-step troubleshooting techniques that can be safely conducted by any boat owner, including using a multimeter. The class is designed for the inexperienced (no prior knowledge is required), although it will be challenging for some; familiarity with volts, amps, and ohms will make the learning experience easier. The immediate goal is to enable participants to head off premature battery and systems failures, and to perform simple troubleshooting techniques that will rapidly identify the majority of electrical problems seen on boats. The overarching goal is to raise the confidence levels of boat owners given today’s increasingly electrically-loaded and complicated boats. You will likely save the price of admission by not having to make service calls.

This is the second of Friday’s two half-day classes. Learn more and buy tickets to the first Friday class. This event will take place on the Cruising and Technical Stage which is on the 2nd floor of the yellow building at the Northwest Maritime campus. The stage can be reached by our elevator, with accessible parking nearby.

FinRae Dry Ice Blasting: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Solutions
Friday September 6, 2024 3:00pm - 3:45pm PDT
Learn about the process and benefits of dry ice blasting and cleaning. Using environmentally safe Dry ice to clean a multitude of surfaces and applications without the need for chemicals or water, eliminating secondary waste and contaminated water runoff. Showcasing the science and history behind this revolutionary cleaning method.
The benefits of dry ice cleaning are superior to other harsh impactful methods. Able to clean corrosion, grease, grime and oils from a multitude of surfaces at the same time with out the need for dismantling equipment.
Able to clean engine bays as well as boat hauls. Able to treat and surface prep wood, fiberglass, aluminum and metals, able to remove oils and resins. With adjustable levels of particles size, ice flow and pressure, the application can be adjusted from industrial strength down to delicate surfaces.
Dry ice is a food grade medium, which is FDA, EPA, and USDA certified, which makes it the ideal solution for cleaning equipment that would be using food processing, like that in the Fishing industry.
Because dry ice cleaning is also ideal for cleaning any electrical equipment, as no water is used., it is non toxic, non conductive and non abrasive.

All well helping protect or water ways and environment

Maritime Matriarchs: The Women Shaping the International Marine Sector
Friday September 6, 2024 3:00pm - 4:00pm PDT
Whether it be boatbuilding, fishing, sailing, or navigating, women have always played vital roles in the maritime industry. Yet, the representation of women remains low across nearly every marine sector. Why is that? What do we sacrifice when we don’t prioritize the inclusion and leadership of women in the marine trades?

These questions led Annie Means to travel the world as part of her yearlong Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. In her presentation, she will explore the numerous incredible women at work in the blue economy. From female-led fishing cooperatives in Costa Rica to shipyards in the United Kingdom, cargo ship docks in New Zealand, and coral restoration efforts in Indonesia, Annie’s presentation highlights the vital importance of visibility and documentation in this sector.

Joined by co-presenter Belinda Joslin, the founder of the Women in Boat Building Network, Annie and Belinda will take a deep dive into one of the products from this year of research: the production of the web series The British Boat Builders 2023 Tour. This three-part web series highlights the remarkable craftsmanship of women boat builders across the United Kingdom. Featuring everything from single-woman boatyards to superyacht factories and sail lofts, the series aims to elevate the profiles of female boat builders. Rather than marginalizing them through stories focused on gender, it uplifts them by letting their craft speak for itself. Come join us to learn more about women's roles in the international maritime sector.

Info and tickets here- https://r2ak.com/blazer-party
It’s a reunion, awards ceremony, and a kickoff beer bash all wrapped into one! And everyone is invited to join in.
In as much formality as we can muster, we’ve spent a year buying up the best/worst thrift store blazers that will be issued to any racer that attends. Non-racers, spectators, hangers-on, and general no-goodniks in attendance are encouraged to wear anything awesome that is not a blazer. We leave that honor to the racers. (Alaska racers who completed the full race get to keep both sleeves of their blazers—volunteers with scissors are standing by for racers whose race ended south of Ketchikan.)
The Blazer Party is like Monte Carlo, except less gambling and yachts and more dogs and peanut shells. It’s a James Bond retirement party after he already blew his 401-K. This is an event no adventure race fan wants to miss!

All About Dovetails
Saturday September 7, 2024 10:00am - 10:45am PDT
Dovetails allow boards to be joined at the ends to form a carcase or box. The joint is mechanically strong and provides a large surface area of good fiber contact for glue adhesion. Further the box’s component boards can move with humidity change, with no restriction or grain conflict through the box or at the joint.

In this lecture/ demonstration, I will discuss and show examples of various dovetail joints: through, half-blind, sliding (french), housed tapered and variations on these forms. I will cut and fit one dovetailed part.

Sailing Into Our Seventies (Expanded)
Saturday September 7, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
Decisions, decisions when you know you're not finished sailing. This talk--part travelogue, part boat tips, and mostly mindsets--is inspired by four different summer's international voyages in the Baltic and North Seas with my Swedish circumnavigating friend, Silvija (now 78) on the 46' boat she and husband Egon (now deceased) built in the 1970s. In each of our four summers sailing together, the itinerary, crews, goals, and challenges were different. As a woman in the WBF audience told me last year, "It's not just about modifying the boat. It's about modifying ourselves."

Saturday September 7, 2024 2:00pm - 2:45pm PDT
NOAA has been "Sunsetting" the Raster Charts data set over the last several years, and now most of these charts are no longer updated. What most boaters don't understand is that NOAA has NOT retired PAPER charts. They've actually made them better. Captain Phyllis Woolwine of Shearwater University will provide highly practical and relevant practices for using both paper and electronic charts together, for the most powerful applications of both for skilled piloting on the Salish Sea and anywhere in the world. Bring your tablet or laptop, as we'll be doing hands-on learning experiences. This presentation will include:
• What is the NOAA Marine Charts "Raster Sunset" transition, and how does it affect boaters
• Benefits and limitations of paper charts
• Benefits and limitations of electronic charts & chart plotters
• Hands-on Tutorial learning NOAA's new Custom Chart tool - a powerful resource that combines the best of both worlds
• An integrated approach to plotting and piloting routes so you NEVER have to experience a calamity at sea

The Plywood Viking Ship Adventure
Saturday September 7, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
In 2019, John C. Harris and the team at Chesapeake Light Craft resolved to build a faithful and accurate replica of a late-Viking Age working craft. The target was the 26-foot "Gislinge Boat," built around the year 1130AD and recovered by Danish archeologists in 1993. A number of Gislinge Boat replicas have been built, but CLC's would be the first to be cut on a CNC machine and assembled stitch-and-glue style. It's certainly the only boat of its type that can be ordered as a flat-pack kit. John tells the fascinating (and amusing) story of the fraught design process, the challenge of the prototypes, and "defiling the temple" by building such a boat out of marine plywood.

The Resurgence of Haida Sail Making
Saturday September 7, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
The Resurgence of Haida Sail Making
The resurgence of traditional Haida sail making speaks to the heart of Haida identity and sovereignty. The act of weaving cedar bark to construct the first traditional Haida cedar sail in over a century is not merely a revival of a lost art but a declaration of the enduring Haida connection to ocean spaces and to the essential role of cedar for the Haida. This project, begun in 2023, is resulting in powerful sharing of utilitarian skills and ancestral knowledge within the Haida Nation and also with indigenous knowledge bearers around the Pacific Rim. This presentation by two eminent Haida weavers provides a look at the evolution and progress of this project that links historical knowledge with vibrant cultural continuity.

The Pursuit of Deep Sea Minerals: Is It Green?
Saturday September 7, 2024 3:00pm - 3:40pm PDT
Commercial scale deep sea mining is just over the horizon and many people don't know what it really is, what it will involve, and what the potential impacts will be on animals both on the seafloor as well as in the water column. Deep sea mining focuses on 3 types of deposits: Mn nodules, MN crusts, and massive sulphide deposits. The extraction of these different types of deposits will require different types of technology, which to date, have proven to be difficult to develop due to the extreme conditions in the deep ocean. Furthermore, all three types of deposits will result in impacts that could potentially be catastrophic for the marine environment. This talk will introduce the different types of deep sea mining to the audience, explaining where and how commercial operations will likely begin, and why there is concern about the regulation of this industry and its potential impacts. It's the speaker's contention that deep sea mining must occur to support the development of green technology, but mining techniques must be developed first in order to ensure this new industry has the lowest impacts possible to the environment.

The goal is to use as few resources as necessary to go as far and fast as possible. Designed by Paul Bieker and Russell Brown, the boat is sleek and streamlined. CNC-cut plywood and fir layered with fiberglass makes for a light and stiff platform. Cruising at 16 knots at no more than two gallons per hour, the range is upwards of 128 nautical miles with current fuel capacity. Keep an eye out for this little outrigger as its small wake points the way toward more efficient boating in the future.

The Resurgence of Haida Sail Making: A New Era of Masted Haida Canoes
Saturday September 7, 2024 3:00pm - 4:00pm PDT
A New Era of Masted Haida Canoes
Haida canoes endured colonization and are justifiably celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship. The seafaring prowess of these canoes and their navigators connected the Haida with the ocean and facilitated trade, communication, and cultural exchange for generations. Masted ocean-going canoes are referenced historically, and this project brings together the creation of a new masted canoe of old-growth cedar with the making of cedar sails. The process of linking exacting carving skills, the piecing together of nearly-lost knowledge legacies, and the contributions of numerous community members, young and old, is making this ambitious project advance the Haida’s vital seafaring heritage. Guujaaw and his son Jaalen Edenshaw, who are internationally acknowledged as master carvers and culture bearers, will share both the cultural technologies and the significance of this project.

Sailbotix: Exploring New Horizons With Autonomous Boats for Education

Colin will share details of his most recent project - enabling kids to explore and experience the deep ocean using micro robotic boats. These vessels, only 4' in length are capable of crossing vast oceans. They are equipped with sensors and course is controlled by satellite. The kids spend six months getting the boats ready for sea, pack a compartment with gifts and souvenirs, and then launch it - destined to voyage to another classroom across the ocean. The boat is then tracked online, as the kids follow its multi-month voyage across the ocean across the ocean. When the boat gets near shore, local schools are contacted and the boat is retrieved. The recipient school then opens the boat to get the gifts and messages, and the schools connect creating a multi-cultural connection.

A modern version of the classic message in a bottle, this initiative is meant to create a sense of stewardship and understanding of one of the most remote regions on the planet. Very few kids get to explore the wild ocean, and this is an opportunity to do it vicariously.

Abbey Boat Builder.
Fight or Float
A story of true grit, passion beyond reason, scuffed knuckles, bruised knees and broken hearts.

Abbey started her career as an apprentice, following a fascinating but not easy childhood, homeschooled and sent to the wild by devoted and adoring parents. Exploring England to find what made her tick. She eventually found herself climbing the ranks of a prestigious boat yard on the River Thames in London where she lived and worked on the water. Being guided by a gruff father and son team who over the years carved her into somewhat of a boatbuilding machine. Living, training and learning the craft in a highly stressed and pressured commercial setting that had both bills to pay and excellence to deliver gave Abbey the drive and ‘fight’ to see the industry beyond its often dreamy fantasy… today she runs a busy yard. Taking on ambitious restorations, with her heart set on building an empire and training a small army of apprentices with a focus on capturing their passion early, regardless of their background, class or gender.

Special Movie Presentations: The Sound & West Shore
Saturday September 7, 2024 6:30pm - 8:00pm PDT
We are thrilled to announce that Indigenous storytellers and filmmakers Children of the Setting Sun Productions will bring two short films to Wooden Boat Festival for Saturday night’s Movie Special: The Sound and West Shore.
In their own words: “Children of the Setting Sun’s responsibility is to create and share Indigenous stories of gratitude, generosity, and respect, to empower the minds and hearts of future generations.”
The Sound is a coming-of-age TV drama that follows a group of Indigenous Coast Salish teens as they travel through their ancestral waterways in a traditional canoe. Their journey starts as an escape from hurt and trauma but soon becomes a purposeful route to transformation and self-discovery. At Festival they will share their proof-of-concept pilot episode!

West Shore is a story of the 2023 Paddle to Muckleshoot with the West Shore Canoe Family.
Both screenings will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 6:30 PM on the Cruising & Technical Stages.

Sunday September 8, 2024 9:30am - 10:30am PDT
When the Philip & Leslie threw off the dock lines in 2003, their offshore cruising experience was extremely limited and their cruising plans were vague. They soon realized that their adventure was not about sailing, but it was about the amazing people they could meet and know, and the impact they might make. Together they worked hard to stay afloat and to seek out opportunities to "leave a clean wake" wherever Carina's anchor rested. They will share highlights of places few ever visit.

Adventuress is owned and operated by the nonprofit Sound Experience, a WA State 501(c)(3) education organization.

Multihulls as a Climate-Friendly Option: Power and Sail
Sunday September 8, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
The climate asks our opulent western world to retool and reduce its carbon impact by three quarters. At half the weight and one quarter the resistance to motion, good multihulls already fit the bill. But their width makes them unfriendly to our crowded marinas and on highways. Presenter Peter Walford shows stock and original designs that trailer and telescope to change all that. As well, green cred requires an efficient build strategy, sustainable materials, and intentional end-of-life disposal. His past boating includes three trailerable trimarans, powerboats, a few catamarans, offshore and inshore racing, building, liveaboard and 30 years of Pacific Northwest cruising.

Life After Whale: The Amazing Ecosystem of a Whale Fall
Sunday September 8, 2024 12:00pm - 12:45pm PDT
Lynn will present a slideshow illustrating what happens when a whale dies and creates a whole new ecosystem at the bottom of the sea. With reading, images and hands on activities kids will follow a blue whale’s enormous body to the bottom of the ocean, where it sets the stage for a bustling new ecosystem to flourish.

All living things must one day die, and Earth’s largest creature, the majestic blue whale, is no exception. But in nature, death is never a true ending. When this whale closes her eyes for the last time in her 90-year life, a process known as whale fall is just beginning. Her body will float to the surface, then slowly sink through the deep; from inflated behemoth to clean-picked skeleton, it will offer food and shelter at each stage to a vast diversity of organisms, over the course of a century and beyond.

The Greening of Maritime Shipping: Revival of Sail, Electrical, & Other Innovations
Sunday September 8, 2024 12:00pm - 12:45pm PDT
The maritime shipping fleet accounts for over 3% of global CO2 emissions – as much as the entire country of Germany. Adapting to new economic and environmental realities, maritime shipping is now seeking more efficiency and is turning to new technologies like electrification and to old-now-new technologies like sail. This presentation will review economics, environmental issues, and international policies such as recent UN maritime standards for carbon reduction. Innovations will be highlighted including: wind assisted (sail) propulsion on major shipping vessels, “well to wake” zero-emissions maritime fuels, port systems for onshore power supply (OPS), and ferry electrification Norway, the UK, and soon in Washington state.

The European green crab (Carcinus maenas), considered one of the world’s worst invasive species, recently entered inland waters of Washington. If a population establishes, it could threaten native habitats and species. Washington Sea Grant, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, and partners have teamed up to lead a volunteer-based early detection and monitoring program to improve our understanding of native salt marsh and pocket estuary organisms, and how they could be affected by green crabs.
