The Western Flyer was built at Tacoma’s Western Boat Building Company in 1937. In 1940 John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts chartered the sardine seiner for a trip to the Sea of Cortez. Renamed and neglected, the boat sank for the second time in 2012.

In 2015 the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op was contracted to rebuild the Western Flyer PTSC partners, TIm lee and Pete Rust led the reconstruction. Join Tim and Pete as they discuss the project of dismanteling and rebuilding over 90% of the hull of this iconic fish boat.
