"Ghost Fishing" is a term for the hidden threat of lost or abandoned fishing nets and crab pots in the Salish Sea. This derelict or ghost gear continues to capture and kill marine animals and is harmful to the marine habitat it occupies. Come learn how the Northwest Straits Foundation is battling these ghosts gear through an aggressive campaign of removals, research, outreach and education. Since 2002 the Foundation has removed over 5,800 ghost nets and 8,000 ghost pots restoring more than 870 acres of marine habitat saving millions of marine animals each year. Here we will learn the problems, challenges, and solutions of dealing with ghost gear and what we can all do to help.
